Dispel Confusion Vol. 1, No. 4
October 2005

If you have specific questions regarding the Living Greyhawk campaign, please post your questions on the official Living Greyhawk message board forum, located on the Wizards community boards.

All other questions regarding Dungeons & Dragons or the RPGA should be submitted though our customer service Knowledge Base, where you can reach our staff, or your question may already be answered online.

All references to the three Dungeons & Dragons core rulebooks refer to the version 3.5.

Much of the information in this FAQ will be added to the next version of the Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook. This particular Dispel Confusion focuses on rules updates, and discussion about the Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook itself. As always, all such updates are effective immediately from the date of this document’s publication.

Clarifications

Q: I’m confused by the term “core”. It seems to be used a lot in the Living Greyhawk campaign. Can you explain how it is used?

A: The term core does have a variety of uses in Dungeons & Dragons and Living Greyhawk. Listed below are some definitions of the term core, as they pertain to the Living Greyhawk campaign. More detailed information can be found in the Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook.

  • When referencing rulebooks, the core rulebooks refer to the three basic books of the Dungeons & Dragons game – the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and the Monster Manual. Sometimes the term core supplement is used. In the Living Greyhawk campaign, this term denotes the collective name of the Complete and Races series of D&D accessory rules books (books that generally have the most accessible player options within them).
  • When talking about adventures, the core adventures refer to Living Greyhawk adventures that are universally available for play. These adventures can be ordered through the RPGA no matter where in the world you live (unlike regional and metaregional adventures).
  • When looking at access to rules items (feats, spells, base classes, and prestige classes) in the Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook, the term core denotes rules items universally available to all characters upon reaching 3rd character level (with a few exceptions, noted in that document).
  • On an Adventure Record, a frequency of core next to an item means that you may purchase the item only directly after play of any core adventure.

Q: When is the Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook going to be updated again?

A: We endeavor to have the Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook (LGCS) updated once per year, and in your hands before Winter Fantasy. Even though Winter Fantasy is running a little later this year than in recent years past, the LGCS should still be effective in the campaign sometime during January.

You can expect to see some rules items (feats, spells, prestige classes) from the following books published in 2005 listed as player options in the next LGCS: Heroes of Battle, Stormwrack, and Heroes of Horror.

Q: I’ve heard that the campaign membership as a whole gets to review the Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook and make suggestions during a draft review period, before the document goes live. How does that work?

A: We are changing how we implement the draft review for the Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook, effective with the new update, due out late this year or early 2006. In the past, we had employed a draft discussion public email list, which was heavily moderated to keep discussion focused. Starting with the next update, we will be using the Wizards Community Boards as our open discussion tool. Keep an eye out later this year for more information. In the meantime, if you’re not a member, sign up on the boards by going to www.wizards.com/community. You’ll want to sign up well before discussion begins, since approval may not be instantaneous.

Errata

Q: I recently acquired the Dungeons & Dragons Campaigns Card called Right Scroll for the Job. It makes no mention of the scrolled spell I’m swapping having the same cost in gold or XP as the original. This seems like a great way for me to avoid paying for a more costly spell. Can I swap in a more expensive spell for the spell I have currently scrolled by using this card?

A: No. In addition to the other restrictions on the card, you may only use the card to swap spells that have the same or lower cost. So, you can’t use this card to take your ice storm spell and swap it with a stoneskin, thus avoiding paying the expensive material component cost of the latter spell.

Announcement on the High-Level Play Option

For the last couple of years, many players of the Living Greyhawk campaign have wondered what happens after their character retires. Will Living Greyhawk support higher level play? Ever since characters began to level out of the campaign (as opposed to taking less voluntary exits, such as permanent death or irrevocable loss), the questions on the future of a potential high-level campaign buzz with a much greater intensity. So, in response to those questions, the Circle of Six has finally settled the issue. While we’re still working out some of the details, we can at this time say a few words about it.

There will be a high-level play option for characters that have reached retirement (set at 16th level at the end of this year). Characters that have hit 16th level will be able to participate in it until they hit 21st level, at which point they are permanently removed from all Living Greyhawk play. Once a character has entered the high-level arena, that character can no longer come back into the main campaign (even if they die, and subsequently lose enough levels to drop them below 16th level). The campaign is slated to begin in spring or early summer of 2006. Guidelines and more information will follow in the coming months.
